Oh, Oh, Listen To The Music

Patrick Simmons I know the first 8 songs on "Best of the Doobies" really well. It's obvious when they come on the radio. In fact, I've only heard them on the radio.

Indeed, I've never bought an album of theirs. Even this one on which I painted singer/guitarist Patrick Simmons was a donation I snagged from the local library way back.

That's why I did and still do love the good ol' FM radio. Growing up in SoCal, listening to the great variety from "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on KCRW to "Breakfast With The Beatles" on KLSX (now on KLOS) to Jed the Fish on KROQ, radio really influenced what I heard, especially in the car. I do still listen in my truck today, hearing old greats and new hits that always remind me of why I love music.

What music do you know from back in the day only from the radio? Would you have discovered it today?

Peace.

The Doobie Brothers! Awesome.

I very rarely listen to the radio anymore.
For me, I'd rather have a good CD in or just play one of my playlists off of my iPod.

I don't really know any music from "back in the day" that I only heard on the radio. Nowadays, if I'm listening to classic rock radio and I hear a song from a band I haven't heard of (which doesn't actually happen ever) then I would go out and pick up one of their CDs.

Or, for example, I recently really got into Fleetwood Mac. So now I'm trying to pick up a bunch of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham solo stuff.
But now I'm getting away from your question, so I'll end there! :)

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I wouldn't have discovered a bunch of the music that started me off in different musical directions if I didn't listen to random stuff on the radio. There is a place for selective push of media.

Of course most of the music I've found has been digging through bins at used record stores, which is why Record Store Day, this coming Saturday, means so much to me.

Peace.
