Did You Grow Up On The Couch Like Me? (Or My Top 10, Err, 20 Sitcoms)

I ended up watching a bit of an infomercial for The Carol Burnett Show DVD offer yesterday. I hadn't known that there were musical numbers too. That bunch of people have made me laugh probably the hardest I have. The way Conway would try to make Korman laugh. The sight gags. The guests, including a riotous Steve Martin.

So, Bernadette Peters was one of the musical guest people. I know her best from Steve Martin's "The Jerk" and the Broadway musical "Sunday In The Park With George". She and Mandy Patinkin sang so beautifully in that, gave me chills a couple of times. But she just is so funny!

She's a particular kind of funny. I love all different types of humor, from Woody Allen and "Bringing Up Baby" to South Park and Will Ferrell, but I really enjoy being able to get into long-term funny characters on TV. Here're my favorite sitcoms:

Human Being Good

Odd but deep phrase, isn't it? Think about it for a sec.

Is it what the grammatically challenged cannibal said?

I like words that are both verbs and nouns (no, not like "Google"), especially when they can lead to philosophical discussion. Is the human being good, or is the human being good? (Heehee, oops, I guess you can't hear the emphasis difference in my head. You get it though, right?)

Biblically, "good" is where we started. There is a reason why "good" means more than just "less than great". Good is what G'od (a contraction that my dad taught me) wants of us. If we are to truly reflect Life's purpose for us, good is what we should shoot for, consistently and genuinely.

Heck, it's what Steve Martin strives for in his work.

And it's a powerful question to figure out what you can do with passion that will benefit the world.

My question is why be anything but good? Yes, it's hard. Life is a challenge. Aren't things and experiences more precious when you use effort to get them? We are living in order that Life might experience the limitless possibilities of its creation. So live! Live with passion, taking responsibility for your life.

And then my question becomes:

if, at any given moment, what you are doing is something that you wouldn't want anybody to know about because the action carries some personal, emotional, social, environmental, economic, or legal consequence that you wouldn't readily accept,

why do it?

Comedians Too?

"But, Daniel, comedians aren't musicians," you might say. True usually, but, they are part of our pop culture. An important part, I think. So I've painted George Carlin, Robin Williams, Steve Martin, and Bill Cosby to start. The owner of the Tempe Improv is going to take a look at them this weekend hopefully! Leave me a comment if you want me to paint another comedian on commission for you! All they have to have is an album out on vinyl.
